For those that have never come across a “Kitchen Witch”, it is a doll or poppet that is supposed to depict a “good” witch who inspires productivity and safety in a kitchen, but also counteracts any ill-will directed to the home. It is considered good luck to give a kitchen witch to a friend or family member. It is a tradition of lore though to come from early Scandinavia or Germany. It is not well known in modern Great Britain but was very popular there in Tudor times. We have a pottery angel that sits upon the top of one of our cupboards. It was hung with cayenne peppers. The two forming our “kitchen witch”. This watercolour was painted in 2018.
